Commitment to Green
Peckham industries, Inc. has always made a concerted effort to minimize the impact of our operations in the communities where we do business. An important example of our efforts in this area is the attention the Company gives to environmental stewardship. In addition to including our commitment to comply with all applicable environmental laws and regulation, our Environmental Policy also recognizes that reducing the environmental impact of our operations is an important part of the value we deliver to our customers and an important obligation we owe to our communities. We remain fully committed to achieving environmental excellence guided by the principles of pollution prevention, energy conservation and continuous improvement.
Our commitment to reducing our environmental impact is evidenced by our strict adherence to the rules and guidelines of numerous governmental bodies charged with protecting our natural resources, such as:
- New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (permits focus on air emissions, mining, storm water discharge, wetlands and petroleum storage)
- United States Environmental Protection Agency (response plans for petroleum storage facilities, spill prevention control and countermeasure plans)
- United States Coast Guard (operation plans, terminal security plans and spill response plans for petroleum storage facilities)
- Federal Highway Administration & State Department of Transportation (regulations governing our drivers and trucks)
Mining is defined as temporary land use to be followed by subsequent land use compatible with the surrounding landscape. Examples include agricultural and forestry uses, wildlife habitat uses, recreational uses, and residential or urban building uses. Today, the public expects mining areas to be reclaimed for an appropriate end use.
Whether we are operating a quarry that has been in existence for decades or proposing a new operation, we are prepared with both a State-approved mining and reclamation plan, detailing our mining assessment, methods, staging of operations and proposed final reclamation. The proposed reclamation plan includes the final use of the land, and all our mining activities, such as clearing, stripping, stockpiling and blasting. The goal of reclamation is to leave the site in a condition that has future land value and is compatible with its surroundings. Peckham Industries, Inc. is proud to be a part of the development cycle that will ultimately enhance the quality of life in the communities where our properties are located.
Our commitment to reducing our environmental impact is further evidenced by our investment in state-of-the-art technology:
Asphalt pavements are sustainable and environmentally friendly. All asphalt pavements are 100% recyclable, making them the most recycled products in the world. By installing RAP systems at out hot mix asphalt plants Peckham Industries, Inc. alone recycles over 150,000 tons of asphalt pavements each year, enough to cover 10 football fields.
Our recent acquisition of the cold recycler 2200 CR by Wirtgen highlights our commitment to environmental sustainability and our dedication to greening our practices. This machine is a high-performance cold milling machine that can remove asphalt courses to a depth of 10” and can be used directly as a conventional milling machine, without conversion. By adding cement, water-cement slurry, bituminous emulsion or foamed bitumen to the recycled pavements we have made our operations greener helping to sustain the environment. This process is advantageous in that existing pavement structures can be milled, mixed with binders and pre-compacted in a single pass reducing time, fuel and manpower to complete the job. |
