Asphalt Binders
Liquid asphalt cement is the “black” in blacktop. Hot mix pavements (blacktop) are the backbone of our nation’s highways and roadways and will certainly remain so well into the future. Decades ago, the Company recognized the need to have its own inventories of liquid asphalt cement readily available and created a subsidiary company, Peckham Asphalt Resale Corporation (PARCO), to store the product in bulk. PARCO has three terminals through which we distribute various grades of performance grade (PG) liquid asphalt cement strategically located in the Bronx, NY, Bridgeport, CT and Athens, NY.
Our supply lines are diverse - product is received by rail, barge, ship and truck and originates from both domestic and offshore refineries. This terminal network has provided millions of tons of liquid asphalt cement used to build and maintain the roads and airports in New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Connecticut. We have storage capacity that allows us the versatility to receive, store and distribute various grades of PG over a wide geography. The terminals enhance our philosophy of vertical integration within the Company as we consume a large amount of asphalt cement internally by supplying our hot mix asphalt plants and emulsion mills.

Polymer Modified Asphalt (PMA) is liquid asphalt cement enhanced through the addition of polymers. The polymers yield elasticity and durability to the asphalt cement and the hot mix asphalt pavement. Sold through our PARCO subsidiary and manufactured at our Athens, NY terminal, PMA has enabled us to further enhance our reputation for supply capability and to broaden the products we have to offer our customers. Polymer modified asphalt is increasingly used in road surfacing due to its ability to meet higher pavement performance standards specified by governmental agencies from County Highway Departments to State DOT agencies and the FAA.
Asphalt is a thermoviscous material; when heated it flows as a liquid and when cooled it can be shattered like glass. When unmodified asphalt pavement is subjected to extreme temperatures, it too becomes brittle in the cold and softens under heat. Polymer modified asphalt is custom designed and formulated to minimize the effect of these temperature extremes.
Both our unmodified asphalt cement and our PMA are approved by and meet the requirements of many specifying agencies. Our internal quality control environment is a tremendous asset that allows us to closely control our products to insure they meet product specifications prior to shipping.
