Asphalt Pavements

Hot Mix Asphalt
Peckham Materials Corporation, one of our subsidiary companies, supplies hot mix asphalt (HMA) to the residential, commercial and heavy highway markets through a network of production plants located throughout the entire Hudson Valley Region. Our plants are designed to provide maximum productivity and high quality materials while operating in compliance with all environmental regulations. We know that service is just as important to our customers as price. When trucks are sitting waiting to be loaded, you are not paving, and it’s costing you valuable time and money. Our HMA plants are highly automated, modern production facilities equipped with on-the-scale receipt printing technology enabling trucks to get loaded and on their way quickly. In most plants, the driver doesn’t ever have to leave his truck!

We utilize state-of-the-art computer-controlled batch and drum plants to meet the needs of our diverse clientele, including contractors, municipalities, airports and other major institutions and government agencies. Certified quality control technicians and modern laboratory equipment allow each of our plants to maintain strict standards for all HMA produced. In addition to our stationary HMA plants, we operate a portable hot mix drum plant to extend our services to remote communities or high production requirements on major construction projects. Our skilled crew can mobilize, set up and produce high quality HMA at any job site.

Our knowledgeable and experienced staff is always available to help customers work through challenging technical applications.

Warm-Mix Asphalt
Warm-mix asphalt (WMA) is a relatively new product that has exploded in popularity. WMA is exactly the same as hot mix asphalt but is produced at temperatures of 240°F instead of the standard 300°F. It is produced using the same design and material components as hot mix and is also hauled and placed using the same equipment.

The primary advantage of WMA is that it utilizes less fuel during production thus reducing greenhouse gas and pollution. WMA virtually eliminates the fumes associated with the standard HMA paving operation, thus exposing workers to fewer emissions during the paving process.  In addition, there is ongoing research into the concept that WMA pavements will last longer than HMA pavements. This is due to reduced aging of the pavement during the production process.  The liquid asphalt is exposed to less heat and therefore retains more elasticity meaning the pavement is subject to less thermal cracking during the cold weather. WMA is a very promising product and must be included in any new construction with a commitment to sustainable materials.

Paving with WMA requires no special equipment and our professionals are well-versed in the ecological and economic benefits of using this product. We regulate the additive, test the material and assess its durability against a set of strict quality guidelines that guarantee the best product and service for every job.

Cold Mix Asphalt
Cold Mix Bituminous Pavements (CMB Pavements) are bituminous pavements that are produced at ambient temperatures. The materials are created using paving grade aggregates, asphalt emulsion and are produced in a portable pugmill before being transported to the jobsite in dump trucks and placed by a conventional paver.

CMB Pavements are normally open graded mixes utilizing large percentages of coarse aggregate and low percentages of fine aggregate. This open grading allows the pavement to be very porous. While CMB Pavements have been used for decades in lieu of standard HMA products, recent environmental initiatives have caused porous pavements to be specified by designers to meet storm water control regulations and reduce the use of more expensive traditional storm water collection and control methods. Porous pavements allow water to percolate down through the pavement and be absorbed into the ground below.

CMB Pavements are more flexible than traditional hot mix pavements and are suitable for highways with moderate traffic volumes. Municipalities use them widely for roads where the base may be substandard and where traditional HMA pavements would be susceptible to fatigue cracking. Municipal roadways are ideal for the use of CMB Pavements.

Cold Patch Material
Cold patch has been traditionally viewed as a low-tech material used to temporarily patch potholes to “get you through” until the hot mix plants open in the spring. However, technical developments in the additives used in these materials have resulted in cold patch materials that are more durable and reliable than previous generations of these products.

In addition to standard patch materials, we produce high-performance products with concentrations of additives that enhance bonding between the liquid asphalt and the stone, creating added moisture resistance for the mix. This means the cold patch you put in the pothole in January will still be there in April. Repeated filling of the same potholes will be just a bad memory.

Chip Seals
Chip seals are thin lift maintenance pavements principally designed to protect the surface of an existing bituminous pavement. The chip seal can seal small cracks in the pavement bridge and protect the surface integrity of the existing pavement, adding at least five years of additional service life for a very small investment in time and money. The best project candidates are pavements having good geometry and structural integrity (i.e. a good base).  Exclusive use of hot mix overlays to extend the life of pavements in this condition is both expensive and unwarranted.

Chip seals are installed very quickly and economically with placement rates up to four times greater than traditional hot mix paving so covering 50,000 square yards per day is very achievable. The cost of a single chip seal can be as little as 25% of the cost of a traditional hot mix overlay and provides even more savings as compared to the other exotic thin lift pavements.

The chip seal consists of an application of liquid asphalt emulsion, which can be modified with polymers, followed by an application of uniformly graded crushed stone. The pavement is then rolled and traffic is allowed on it the same day. Chip seals are recommended for municipal and private roadways with moderate traffic levels up to 2,500 vehicles per day.
